Wild Rumpus presents a program of opposites, juxtaposing harmony and noise, movement and stillness. Gritty, kinetic energy reigns supreme in our take on Louis Andriessen’s Workers Union and in the clattering theatrics of David Coll’s Position, Influence. Harmonious stillness characterizes Jacob Cooper’s serene haiku Silver Threads and Arvo Pärt’s modern-day classic Fratres. Delicately poised between these two extremes is Balance of Power by artistic director Dan VanHassel, which is receiving its West Coast premiere. Rounding out the program are world premieres of three new works written for Wild Rumpus by David Bird, Ben Richter, and Ioannis Angelakis, composers who make exquisite use of color and contrast in their work.
