Tracking Series #3, Women Composers and Gender Equity

2018 was coined the Year of the Woman, with courageous women around the nation speaking up against sexual harassment, economic inequality, and other serious issues related to gender discrimination and oppression. The arts are no exception, and while many artistic organizations have launched programs focusing on female voices, significant disparity in artistic programing still exists.

The Center for New Music hosts its third Tracking Series, a series of roundtable discussions on gender and racial equity in contemporary music. On 1/31, the conversation focuses on women composers and gender equity in contemporary music led by Emma Logan and Julie Barwick of Helia Music Collective, which is devoted to supporting the creative endeavors of women in music throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. This comes at the close of Emma’s two-year C4NM curator term; under her tenure she was one of our most prolific curators and presented a wide array of fantastic women composers and performers at our C4NM. Featured panelists include a broad cross section of venerable Bay Area musical artists and arts professionals including Elinor Armer, Pamela Z, Daria Novo, Maggie Payne, Aubrey Bergauer, Sarah Cahill, Mya Byrne, as well as many other voices immeshed in the Bay Area contemporary music scene with proven dedication to uplifting contemporary female voices. This discussion is free and open to all who are interested in discussing both the current artistic and economic conditions for women in music, and future paths to increasing equality.
