The Evidence Trio joins Faults for an evening of sonic explorations by way of electronics, reeds, strings and percussion. The two groups will each create and discover intriguing soundworlds constructed and generated through accident, intention and the unknown.
The Evidence Trio is Kersti Abrams on alto sax, flute and mbira; Thomas Harrison on bass; and Andrew Joron on theremin. They have been improvising and spontaneously composing music together for over five years. Together or separately they are or have been part of a number of configurations of the Bay Area creative music scene, including the M-KAT Ensemble, the Cosmists, Ouroboros, Cloud Shepherd, the Diaspora Focii Trio, Feral Luggage, and Cartoon Justice. The music of the Evidence Trio is a sonic investigation of the evidence of existence through texture and vibration, from the microcosm to the macrocosm and back again.
Faults is the improvising group of Jorge Bachmann, Kevin Corcoran, Jaroba, and Gabby Wen. The group works with electronics, percussion and reeds, and expands to include other collaborators in ad hoc ensembles. Faults has been active as a California electroacoustic noise and improvisation unit since the early 2000s.
Faults’ practice involves site specificity where performances and recordings are made in disused bunkers on a decommissioned naval base, in a columbarium, in a residential garden, and elsewhere. Interaction with the incidental sounds in these environments informs the group’s approach to timbre, tonality, space and extended techniques when playing in more typical venues and studios as well. Their sound oscillates between quiet and loud, sparse and dense, weaving together textural noise, floating melodic lines, and bristling percussive elements. The result is a rich and readily shifting electroacoustic dynamic.
