Venezuelan born flutist Orlando Cela is equally at ease performing music from any time period and cultural heritage. He has performed Baroque music at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, as well as contemporary music in UC Berkeley’s Center for New Music and Audio Technologies, including Chinese Folk Music at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, with musicians such as Paula Robison, Samir Saterjee, John Gibbons, and Hu Jianbing. He also gives regular concerts overseas, having performed in venues such as the Zentrum Danziger (Berlin, Germany), Espace des Femmes (Paris, France), and the Musikverein (Vienna, Austria). He has guest lectured on contemporary music in UC Berkeley, New England Conservatory, Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart (Germany), UC Davis, Tulane University (LA), Berklee College of Music (MA), Brandeis University (MA), Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing (China), and Charlotte New Music Festival (NC). He has also lectured on general performance practices at Flute Festivals in Ithaca and Syracuse, Dulwich College (Beijing), Shanghai Normal University (China), and on writing for flute at Xavier University (LA) and University of New Orleans. Orlando recently created FluteLab, a forum in which composers can send questions about writing for flute: Orlando makes videos answering these questions for other composers to see as well, helping to spread the knowledge on the latest compositional techniques. The FluteLab videos are just a few of the more than 500 hundred videos in his YouTube Channel showcasing performances, rehearsals and lectures. Last year saw the release of Orlando Cela’s “Project Extended,” an album of music using only extended techniques, written specially for him. He has recorded three albums of his own, and been involved in numerous others.
