This program is an exploration into the electroacoustic sound world, showcasing the use of electronics to extend the palate of the solo flute. In “NoaNoa,” Kaija Saariaho uses her unique compositional voice to create a stunning array of colors, simultaneously visceral and elegant. Benjamin Broening’s “Trembling Air,” reminiscent of this soundscape, combines with “NoaNoa” to evoke the rawness of the natural world. These pieces are a fitting prelude to Adam Shield’s brand new work “The Uncertainty Principle,” which begins before the Big Bang and describes the infinitesimally small moment during which galaxies came into existence. In his notes prefacing the piece, Adam writes that “there is no story more beautiful or more sublime than the unfolding epic of our universe.
