Steve Horowitz’s Code Ensemble Plays the music of Hans Tammen’s Third Eye Orchestra
New York composer Hans Tammen likes to set sounds in motion, and then sit back to watch the movements unfold. Unsettling, frantic and anti-sentimental, he fuses unremitting polyrhythmic machinations with ethereal yet roughly sewn soundscapes, “a unique, immediate, visceral and engaging musical experience.” (Irwin Block / Avant Music News).
Tammen, currently in residence at Lucas Artists Residencies Montalvo, makes a rare appearance in San Francisco with new works for Steve Horowitz’s Code Ensemble. Hans borrows from Charles Ives’ polytonality, Steve Coleman’s rhythmic complexity, Karlheinz Stockhausen’s organization of sounds and Earle Brown’s approach to form.
