Thanks to generous support from MGP grants by InterMusic SF, Honda is delighted to present four concert series, welcoming the new addition of Matt Small to the band, marking the beginning of a new compositional journey.

Motoko Honda’s Simple Excesses Quartet is an avant-garde jazz chamber ensemble driven by the visionary leadership of pianist and composer Motoko Honda. With a profound passion for jazz and a background in classical training, Honda formed the quartet in 2013, to fulfill her desire to create a distinct musical language that blends tradition with innovation.
The quartet’s lineup consists of exceptionally skilled musicians, each contributing their unique artistry to the group’s mesmerizing sound. Combining elements from traditional jazz, avant-garde experimentation, and contemporary classical influences, their compositions are characterized by intricate rhythmic patterns, harmonically rich textures, and fearless improvisation.
