Piano, trumpet, saxophones/clarinet, and percussion: 4 players using these instruments to bring sound worlds into existence. Pianist Satoko Fujii, and trumpeter, Kappa Maki have a long-standing musical relationship that spans many year, many groups, many musical genres, and now many continents. Former Tokyo residents, now calling Berlin home, they will make a rare Bay Area appearance at Center for New Music. Joined by Rova’s Bruce Ackley on tenor and soprano saxophones, and Bb clarinet, and Jordan Glenn, percussion, the quartet will launch its first concert together. Ackley has previously performed in the US, Europe and Japan with Fujii and Maki, in Orkestrova, a large ensemble formed to play and record pieces by Satoko and Rova. Glenn and Ackley performed at the Oakland Active Festival last February, as part of another Rova-augmented ensemble. These experiences are evidence of the potential of this foursome.
