Join Tangents Guitar Series in the inaugural concert of our 2014 season, presenting NYC guitarist Dan Lippel (ICE). Dan will weave a varied sonic tapestry featuring acoustic and electric guitars, including works by Davidovsky, Fujikura, and others.
Tangents, an independent concert series created and run by young musicians, explores the many approaches to the contemporary guitar. Their inaugural season featured six dynamic acts, each presenting a program of new and recent music for guitar, solo and in ensemble. From seductive microtonality to mesmerizing minimalism, and from austere post-serialism to rock-influenced grooves, selections run the gamut of the “Art music” repertoire in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Tangents brings new music to new audiences, catering to guitar aficionados as well as to the general public; concerts often feature spoken introductions to the program, providing context and insights into the music, while creating a more collegial and relaxed listening environment.
Guitarist Daniel Lippel, called a “modern guitar polymath” (Guitar Review), enjoys a diverse career that ranges through solo and chamber music performances in the U.S. and internationally, innovative commissioning and recording projects, and performances in diverse contexts. He has premiered more than fifty new pieces written for him and his ensembles (most recently John Zorn’s Baudelaires for ensemble and Dai Fujikura’s Sparking Orbit for electric guitar and electronics), and has recorded many of them on his independent label, New Focus Recordings. His interest in collaboration led to becoming the guitarist for the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) in 2005, and new music quartet Flexible Music in 2003. As a chamber musician, Lippel has performed at the Macau Music Festival (China), Sibelius Academy (Finland), and the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, and been a guest with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, New York New Music Ensemble, and the Cygnus Ensemble among others. Recent recital highlights have been the Cleveland International Guitar Festival at CIM, the Philadelphia Guitar Society. Lippel has worked with many eminent composers including Mario Davidovsky, John Zorn, Magnus Lindberg, Nils Vigeland, and Ursula Mamlok, as well as with several of the most active younger composers on the creation of new works, including Dai Fujikura, Nico Muhly, and Ken Ueno.
An active performer in non-classical contexts as well, he has performed solo sets of his own music for amplified classical guitar and effects at Tokyo’s O-Nest, Paris’ Café de la Danse, Krakow’s Unsound Festival, and the Knitting Factory in New York. As a member of the eclectic indie group Mice Parade since 2004, he has toured Europe, Japan, and North America several times, and performed on the Fuji Rock (Japan) and Sydney (Australia) festivals. His masterclasses and presentations include the Hanns Eisler Hochschule in Berlin, University of New Mexico, Syracuse, University of Texas at Austin, University of California at Davis, and Manhattan School of Music. He received his DMA from the Manhattan School of Music, under the guidance of David Starobin. His earlier teachers were Jason Vieaux and John Holmquist at CIM, Stephen Aron at Oberlin, and David Leisner and Nicholas Goluses.
