What happens when global events turn our lives upside down? When everything we thought we knew comes into question? The two string quartets on tonight’s program examine these questions. Shostakovich’s blistering masterpiece, String Quartet no. 8, is a personal and harrowing response to the bombing of Dresden during World War II, and to repressive political forces at home. Davide Verotta’s brand new commissioned work, the quartet Vita Oscura, was written especially for the Circadian String Quartet. It charts an emotional response to our present-day upheavals in which rosy future projections must give way to a fragile and groping reevaluation. Join us for these two powerhouse works as we livestream them from San Francisco’s Center for New Music.
