In the second part of Emma Logan’s “Alone/Not Alone” series, San Francisco Bay Area flutist Jessie Nucho and pianist Anne Rainwater present music for flute, piano, and electronics by living women composers. The program features a variety of technological affects, from Alex Temple’s spacious “Willingly” to the tour-de-force that is Mei-Fang Lin’s “Interaction.” Elainie Lillois’s “Among Fireflies” uses interactive electroacoustics turn the alto flute into a “meta” instrument, and Anne LaBerge’s “Never Again” rounds out the program with a quasi-beatbox soundscape.
San Francisco flutist Jessie Nucho is passionate about sharing both traditional and contemporary music as a chamber musician, soloist, and educator. Jessie enjoys collaborations with musicians throughout the country, often premiering new works by emerging composers. In addition to regularly performing with Wild Rumpus and Ensemble Mik Nawooj, Jessie has recently performed with Frequency 49 and the Fog City Guitar Duo. As a soloist, she has performed at San Francisco’s Center for New Music, the Berkeley Arts Festival, the Hot Air Music Festival, and the Legion of Honor as well as appearing as a guest soloist with the Carnegie Mellon University Baroque Ensemble and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Percussion Ensemble. Jessie is a founding member of Siroko Duo, a flute duo dedicated to commissioning and performing new works in creative spaces. Jessie holds an MM from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Tim Day. Previous instructors include Alberto Almarza and Jeanne Baxtresser.
Oakland-based pianist Anne Rainwater is a dexterous musician known for her vibrant interpretations of works from J.S. Bach to John Zorn. Recognized for her “boldly assertive rhetoric” (San Francisco Examiner) and “bright golden honeycomb for a brain” (Roy Doughty, poet), she appears as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator. She holds a Bachelor of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory and a Master of Music in Contemporary Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. Anne has performed in venues and festivals throughout the world, including the Donau Festival in Krems, Austria, the Kennedy Center, Princeton University, and Kampnagel in Hamburg, Germany, among others. Recent solo shows include performances at the Center for New Music, Maybeck Studio, Berkeley Arts Festival, and the Old First Series in San Francisco. Anne also teaches privately in her home studio to students of all ages.
