The Tracking Series is organized by the Center for New Music. These quarterly events catalyze and build a community of new music researchers to demonstrably improve gender and racial equity within the field of new music. Each event is designed to include action, feedback, and discussion.
The first event/meetup in the Tracking Series will help orient our community’s efforts through the following three items:
1. Discussion: Chamber Music America’s Commitment
In 2017, Chamber Music America – the national service organization for ensemble music professionals, published a Statement of Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity. More recently, CMA launched its Composer Equity Project, described as “a database of women and ALAANA composers that will be accessible on CMA’s website.” We will dig into CMA’s statement and actions in a facilitated discussion and group reflection.

2. Feedback: Presenter Pledge
California Symphony (based in Walnut Creek) has made a public commitment to meet specific programming benchmarks beginning in its 2018/19 season. The Center for New Music hopes to create a similar pledge, which could be co-signed by members of its community who are responsible for programming. We’ll provide suggestions and feedback to help shape the Center’s pledge, including opinions on key data points, identification of possible pitfalls, and thoughts on creating accountability within a community-based institution.

3. Action: Build a Research Index
Who are the people leading the way? Help build an index of critics and researchers whose work contributes to improved gender and racial equity in new music. The group’s contributions will provide and honor a named network of scholars, create an online resource, provide a guide for acquisitions of the C4NM community library, and point to potential collaborators or future contributors to the Tracking Series.
