Desert Magic is a music collective founded in 2015 by Alex Wand, Steven Van Betten, and Logan Hone. In 2015, the group released their debut album piecemeal on the solstices and equinoxes on a-round-the-sun.com and in 2018, they composed “Dance of the Planets,” an interactive solar system sonification app. In 2019, they released “In the Universe,” an album of musical settings of verses from the Tao Te Ching. In addition to Alex, Logan, and Steven, The band’s current line-up includes multi-instrumentalist, Mustafa Walker. For their performance at the Center for New Music, they will be premiering a new song cycle that primarily uses Ursula Le Guin’s version of the Tao Te Ching as text. The song cycle is entitled “The Valley Spirit.”
Meg Baird is an American musician based in San Francisco, California, United States, who, in addition to her solo career, is known as a founding member, lead vocalist, and drummer for Heron Oblivion, along with members from Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound and Comets on Fire. She was also a guitarist and the lead vocalist in Philadelphia psychedelic folk rock band Espers, and played drums in Philadelphia punk band Watery Love. Baird frequently collaborates with the Los Angeles-based harpist Mary Lattimore.
