Lisa B (Lisa Bernstein) and Band: “Reverberant: Poems & Music”
Join in funding Lisa B’s seventh album, “Reverberant: Poems & Music,” scheduled for an October 2019 release on her Piece of Pie Records, and a series of concerts in 2019 and 2020 showcasing the new music.
“Reverberant” joins the two strands of Lisa B’s work, vocal jazz and poetry, in exciting new ways. Lisa B’s previous albums feature her jazz vocals in original songs and standards, frequently embedded with original spoken verse that melds influences from literature to contemporary rap. The new release, in contrast, presents her free-verse poems, with occasional singing, in dynamic compositions created with diverse musicians in duo and trio settings.
A single from the album, “I Am an Orchestra: A Tribute to Cecil Taylor,” was released in March 2019, attracting press from major jazz sites Jazz Times, Jazziz, All About Jazz, L.A. Jazz Scene, and others, along with thousands of listens.
The 10 pieces in “Reverberant” are linked by the theme of reverberation, literal and metaphorical. They fall into two categories, with much overlap: jazz portraits and spiritual self-realization. Many of the poems appeared in esteemed literary journals (Kenyon Review, Lilith, Brilliant Corners, Sequestrum, Caliban). “Reverberant” speaks to both jazz and poetry audiences, fostering appreciation of one art form to fans of the other
The masterful, inventive performers joining Lisa are engineer/multi-instrumentalist James Gardiner, pianist Scott R. Looney, keyboardist Ben Flint, drummer Jeff Marrs, and bassist Marcus Shelby. They each contribute not only virtuosity but an empathetic response to language and excitement about realizing these poems in music.
Your 100% tax-deductible donation will help fund completion and release of the recording, performances in 2019 and 2020, and getting the word out to audiences and listeners.
