In 2023 Robbie Martin alongside collaborator Kelly Porter premiered THTHNG. One part unauthorized sequel to the John Carpenter classic horror film, one part sensory overload of visceral body horror and gore. Before AI slop became a household term, before the Butlerian Jihad started, THTHNG was technically the very first full-length ‘AI movie’ ever produced or screened for an unsuspecting audience.
THTHNG II takes the concept in a much more refined direction while still leaning into the uncanny creepiness of AI image and video generation. Illegally starring an ensemble cast of semi recognizable obscure 80s horror movie actors, THTHNG II follows their horrifying journey through Antartica, Florida, and Argentina as they try to survive the now full blown global infection. YT Obscura is a new experimental audio visual performance by Fluorescent Grey born out of the discovery of strange one-of-a-kind, personal and at times very unsettling home recordings on audio cassettes found at flea markets. Wondering if the same concept could be applied to the internet, Robbie picked up some rudimentary programming techniques to tap into the backend of the largest archive of obscure and low/almost no view count home video recordings, Youtube. Sitting somewhere between a live sampling mashup and a carefully edited found footage film, YT Obscura uses only source material uploaded before 2008 with view counts lower than 20. Every performance of YT Obscura is unique, as the videos are pulled from the internet in real-time and edited together using unusual ‘match cut’ techniques like matching spoken words, body position, movement, color composition across completely unrelated material.
WARNING: because of the nature of the highly obscure ‘home video’ material, some performances *may* include footage from accidental uploads, or uploads without the participants consent which some may find voyeuristic or disturbing, (even though all the clips exist on Youtube publicly today, URLs to each video will be provided in post show notes).

Robbie Martin has made experimental electronic music as Fluorescent Grey since the mid-1990s. He founded the Oakland label “Record Label Records” at fifteen — home to Scorn (Mick Harris), Kush Arora (Only Now), Sote, Contagious Orgasm and Nommo Ogo — and has released sixteen records of his own appearing on imprints Katabatik, Acroplane, RRRecords, Nebleena, Naboamusic, Jacktone, Geräuschmanufaktur and Isolate. His dense 3xLP Ambiente was given a recommendation in the MIT Computer Music Journal for the physical modeling synthesis used, and its follow-up Delta Quadrant was described by Juno as “sci-fi-influenced noise-delia”. He’s often heard on the :zoviet*france: podcast A Duck in a Tree, and can be regularly seen performing in the revolving lineup of musicians in Katabatik.
In 2015 Robbie veered into filmmaking with the release of the 3-part 7-hour long, A Very Heavy Agenda, which was met with reactions like “one of the most disorienting pieces of cinema i’ve ever seen” (Letterboxd) and “the best documentary I have watched – on any subject – in years” (Spyculture).
In 2023, being an early adopter of AI visual tools, Robbie premiered several AI short films at the Volumens festival in Valencia, Spain and later linked up with visual artist Kelly Porter to produce the full length fictional horror movie THTHNG.
