Cartographic improvisations using projected, manipulated, digital maps in dialogue with composed and improvised soundtracks. A wash of street grids, coastlines, land masses, contours, and curiosities from built and natural environments. Auditory roundabouts and cul-de-sacs. Disorienting labels and free-floating symbology. Driving rhythms. Colors, both saturated and subtle. Zooms, pans, rotations, and traversals. Wayfinding frustrations and failures. Sensory glitches originating in crowdsourced data. GIS as expanded cinema.
The performance will occasionally introduce strobing effects that may affect photosensitive viewers.
Theise premiered A Synesthete’s Atlas in Lisbon (Apr 2022) with cellist Helena Espvall. Since then it’s been performed nearly forty times with different accompanists in venues throughout North America, and Amsterdam. This will be Theise’s last Bay Area performance prior to an autumn tour of Midwest, East Coast, and Canadian cities, and a residency at Rotterdam’s WORM.
