Aki Tsuyuko (Japan) has been composing music for nearly twenty five years, however, she had almost never performed her own music before an audience. While reproducing her works for organ on a piano, Aki developed an exploratory technique between composition and improvisational experimentation, creating new compositional rules for herself as she improvises along to the melodies and harmonies of her existing compositions. Upon this concept, Aki began performing her own experimental solo recital (Aki Tsuyuko’s Room) live bimonthly at a small venue in Japan, performing for her audience in a manner similar to the exploration of her own composition and improvisation during the time spent playing instruments in her room. For her first trip abroad for live solo performance, Aki wishes to share these compositions and improvisations with the rest of the world.
Ippei Matsui is a painter from Japan, who began to draw when he was 4 years old. His work includes design for music releases, performance flyers, books, store displays, and other mixed media, along with solo and group exhibitions of his work around Japan. Coming from a musical background (Ippei began playing guitar at age 10 and currently plays in the experimental band Teasi), Ippei Matsui also performs projected “live drawing” during musical performances, which he will be bringing to the west coast of the US accompanying the compositions of Aki Tsuyuko.
