The Guerrilla Composers Guild was founded with the goal of helping emerging composers find their voice through listening parties, workshops, and concerts. On a quest to further the new music culture in the Bay Area, the Guerrillas are constantly meeting and promoting the best young performers and composers. Unique to the Guerrillas, the audience is encouraged to speak up and provide feedback during breaks in the concert. They have presented concerts and listening parties in venues ranging from small concert spaces to medium size garages, and aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty when it comes to good art.
Led by composers Nick Benavides and Danny Clay, and backed by a loyal niche following, the Guerrillas have worked with a variety of composers and performers to present new music in uncommon venues. This concert will be co-curated with percussionists Mckenzie Camp and Elizabeth Hall. The Guerrillas have commissioned works for ensembles ranging from vocal quartets to pieces for the toy piano and melodica, and have worked with performers ranging from wind chime volunteers to professional members of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. All in all, they have had a direct hand helping with the creation and premiere of at least eight brand new works in addition to promoting the continued performance of other quality pieces that receive little to no play time.
The Guerrilla Composers Guild’s latest installment will feature a slurry of new pieces for percussion by local, up and coming talent. Always on a quest to dig out the best new performers and composers, they will be joined by performers from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s percussion department. The concert will showcase their talents with pieces from their repertory and then six new commissions specifically for this concert. As is tradition, we will open up the floor for discussion, and your vote will help decide who gets the prize of a studio recording! There is also talk of additional prizes…
