Between Appear and Disappear is a new hybrid of photographs and poetic texts on beauty and love by author/photographer Doug Rice. It has been released by Jaded Ibis Productions concurrently with a CD of music intended as a companion for the book, composed and performed by soprano Ann Moss. At this combination CD/Book release event, Ann and Doug will present their work and discuss the collaborative process, offering readings from the text and a presentation of the accompanying music, and answering questions from the audience. Books and CDs will be available for purchase.
Author/Photographer Doug Rice was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He received his BA in English from Slippery Rock State College and did his MA in creative writing at SUNY-Binghamton, where he studied under John C. Gardner, and his MA in English Literature at Duquesne University. He studied for his PhD in Literature at the University of Pittsburgh. His first novel, Blood of Mugwump, was selected by Kathy Acker as a runner-up for the FC2 First Novel Award. He has taught at La Roche College, Kent State University-Salem and currently teaches creative writing, literary theory and film history and theory at Sacramento State University. His work has appeared in numerous anthologies and literary journals including Avant Pop: Fiction for a Daydream Nation, Dirty : Dirty Anthology, Kiss the Sky, Alice Redux, Phantoms of Desire, Discourse, Gargoyle, Zyzzyvya, and others. His work has been translated into Polish, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and German.

Soprano/Composer Ann Moss is an ardent and acclaimed champion of contemporary vocal music who performs and collaborates with a dynamic array of American composers. Her high, silvery, flexible voice has been singled out by Opera News for its “beautifully pure floated high notes” and by San Francisco Classical Voice for its “powerful expression.” In addition to working closely with well-known composers such as Aaron Jay Kernis, John Harbison, Jake Heggie, Wayne Peterson and Eric Sawyer, Ann seeks out and performs works by new and emerging voices at forums, festivals and concert series across the USA. September 2013 marked the release of her debut CD Currents, produced by multiple Grammy Award-winner Leslie Ann Jones and recorded at Skywalker Sound. A native of Boston and a graduate of the Longy School of Music and San Francisco Conservatory, Ann Moss is co-founder and Artistic Director of the San Francisco-based group CMASH (Chamber Music Art Song Hybrid). She has been a featured performer with Earplay, Other Minds Festival, Eco Ensemble, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, Fresno New Music Festival, New Music Works, FENAM, Sanford Dole Ensemble, Composers in Red Sneakers, the Hausmann Quartet, Ives String Quartet and Alexander String Quartet, among others. Ann has served on the faculty of CSU Summer Arts Composer/Performer Collaboration Workshop and has lectured on vocal composition at MIT, Longy School of Music, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, UC Davis, Sacramento State University, CSU Los Angeles, UT Pan America and Cosumnes River College.
