Beyond the MIDI Mock-Up (Workshop & Music Listening)

$60 General, $40 Members
Workshop

This workshop, created by composer and music producer Jerry Gerber, is offered to musicians with playing and writing skills who want to create the most artistic MIDI recordings possible with the technology they have available. All participants will bring a laptop with their respective Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) installed. The topics and techniques we will discuss are cross-platform and will enable musicians to create MIDI recordings with excellent performance values--music with expression, gesture, nuance, depth and subtlety. DAWs that have a notation editor are preferred, but those more familiar with the piano-roll style of editing will still learn valuable information and new skills. Techniques and concepts learned will help the participants use their digital tools in a way that goes beyond the MIDI mockup.

Prerequisites: All participants must play an instrument, read music, and have access to a DAW. DAWs with a notation editor include: Digital Performer (Mac/PC), Logic (Mac), Sonar (PC), Pro Tools (Mac/PC) and Cubase (PC). Reaper, Ableton Live and Presonus Studio One also have MIDI capabilities, but do not have notation capability.

Workshop: Anatolian Improvised Folk Music PLUS Welcome Reception

Free!
Workshop
Special guest and artist-in-residence Nihan Devecioglu (Turkey) will share her knowledge and experiences in a range of international music styles, focusing on Anatolian folk music and connections to the devotional music of the Sufis.

Nihan studied classical singing at the University of Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. This, for her, was the beginning of a journey of immense discovery within a vast space of sound.Since then she has been exploring different techniques of vocal improvisation, and searching for a common ground where different sorts of influences might interweave and merge. Freely exploring the vast boundaries of musical expression on these premises, Nihan seeks for inspiration in sources of distinct natures: the opera, the avant-garde, early music, world music, Turkish sufi and folk, and contemporary art of various forms.

Nihan is in residence at the Center for New Music from October 11 through November 13, with support from CEC ArtsLink. This free workshop will also include a welcome reception for Nihan. More Info

This workshop will begin with experienced project leaders Terrence Brewer and Sandy Cressman sharing how they have navigated these challenges with their own work. The group will then split up, with each panelist leading one small group, so that participants can raise specific questions and gather advice on their own projects.
